Built around one idea
Every pet gets one permanent page, and that page becomes the single source of truth when the pet goes missing.
Why this exists
When a pet goes missing, the news scatters across neighborhood apps, Facebook groups, group texts and paper flyers. None of them stay current, and sightings come in as comments, texts and calls spread across all of them. Weeks later, neighbors are still looking for a pet that came home on day two, and someone who has found an animal has no idea where to report it.
That last part is why we ask people to register a pet on a calm day. Someone who finds a pet can report it here and see registered pets nearby that fit, but only a pet that is already registered can show up.
Microchips help when an animal reaches a vet or a shelter. Collars come off. The large national databases are mostly found at the shelter, and not at eleven at night when you are walking your street with a flashlight. Lost Pet Network is meant for that moment.
What we will not do
- No ads, no tracking pixels, no selling data. A page about your lost pet is not an advertising surface.
- No published phone numbers, addresses or reward amounts. Those are what scammers look for.
- No automated posting to social media. You share your own link. Neighborhood groups are run by volunteers, and we intend to stay welcome in them.
- No promises we cannot keep. A page improves the odds. It cannot guarantee you get your pet back, and we will never say it does.
Where we are starting
Pages, flyers, sightings and matching a found animal to registered pets nearby work anywhere in the United States today. Matching gets more useful the more pets in an area are registered, so we are starting in Austin, Texas and growing outward one neighborhood at a time.
If the service ever ends
We would rather publish a mechanism than a promise. You can export your pet's data at any time. If Lost Pet Network winds down, the imlo.st address that collar tags point to will be handed to a nonprofit or shelter so that tags keep working.
